This WILL Make You Smile #8

I try to keep the line between mother and friend drawn pretty clearly between me and my boys. I figure my kids will have enough friends in life, so, hard as it is, I try to be a consistent and firm parent. I let the boys know what the rules are and enforce consequences when consequences are needed. I don't want to get taken for a ride. And then another ride. And I definitely don't want to end up with some kind of hot mess on my hands.

Honestly, though, now that the big boys are all teenagers and getting more and more mature, it seems natural to share a little more of the real me with them. I think it's important for them to see me and Drew experience all the normal emotions, even if those emotions are doubt and worry.

Generally, I try to keep a lid on it. I try not to share my deepest concerns with them. I try not to share any frustrations I might have with Drew. We are very much a team. I try not to talk about their brothers' issues with them. I try to act like I've got things reasonably in check.

Anyway, last night, I was watching tv down in the basement with Will and Brant and just sort of ruminating about some disappointments and disappointing people.

Brant--ever positive, upbeat Brant, child of sunshine and moonbeams--suggested I was just thinking too much. That maybe I was just interpreting things wrongly.

Will suggested I look into Prozac.

"Alright, well, I don't need either of you to fix this stuff, but.....could you maybe say something to make me feel better?"

Will's eyes flickered. And then there came that grin.

"There's a dozen cake doughnuts upstairs."

I love this! Scott and I had a conversation in a similar fashion on Tuesday night and not only did he tell me I was thinking like my mother but he also playfully suggested antidepressants and food! What is up with the male gender????!!!!

Hi Kelly,

I work for the company that produces Mutual of Omaha’s “Aha Moment” campaign; visit www.mutualofomaha.com/aha to see what an aha moment is and the incredible stories we’ve filmed over the last two years. As I came across your website, I couldn’t help but think that you might have an extraordinary aha moment to share.

We’re taking our 34-foot Airstream mobile film studio to 25 cities to capture inspirational, life-changing aha moments from folks all over the country. We are headed to Winston-Salem, NC on June 9th and 10th, and would love to invite you to share an aha moment! You would just have to step into the Airstream studio for a few minutes and tell your story on film to our tour manager. Your video will then be posted to www.mutualofomaha.com/aha, where you will be able to share it with your friends and family via email, Facebook and Twitter!

For the second year in a row, our tour manager is Jessica Henry. Hailing from Athens, GA, Jessica is an outdoor enthusiast and self-proclaimed "foodie" who enjoys talking about powerful life moments with people just like you all over the country. You can read Jessica’s bio (and meet the rest of the crew) at www.ahamoment.com/tour/about

We will be parked at Old Salem Visitor Center at 900 Old Salem Rd. on June 9th and 10th from 11am to 7pm.

Let me know as soon as possible and I can reserve some time for you.

Many thanks!
